We are planning our summer travels and have booked a six-month stay at Sevier River RV Park in Sevier, Utah. From what I understand, we can ride directly from the park to the Paiute Trail system. I’ve read that the Paiute Trail includes roughly 2,000 miles of roads and trails that are mostly easy but still very scenic. So, it should be a great summer.

Our Polaris XP5 is street-legal and currently has an Idaho out-of-state plate. I asked ChatGPT about Utah riding rules, and the information I received said that riding is only allowed on roads specifically posted as “OHV Allowed.” It also indicated that Utah does not recognize out-of-state plates for riding on non-OHV roads, such as most town streets. To ride on non-designated roads, it appears that a Utah license plate would be required, and that obtaining one would require us to be permanent residents.

I did order the Utah non-resident OHV trail sticker, which allows riding on the trails, but it does not help with riding on town roads.

Has anyone spent time riding in the Sevier area? How is the Paiute Trail system overall? Are the police cracking down on OHVs? More specifically, would we realistically be able to ride from Sevier River RV Park into town for breakfast and then continue on to the trails?

Thanks in advance for any firsthand insight.

Thanks

The piute trail is awesome. There are a lot of trails that are 50” but the do have ways around those sections.
All of the towns along the piute trail allow utv’s to go into town for fuel and whatever. From what I’ve read you should be ok with your Idaho plates as long as you have all the equipment required by Utah. See below

Key Steps & Requirements:
  1. Check Idaho's Reciprocity: First, confirm Idaho allows Utah street-legal OHVs on its roads. If they do, Utah generally reciprocates.
  2. Utah Equipment Check: Your UTV must have:
    • Headlamp, tail lamp, license plate light.
    • Rearview mirrors, horn, muffler.
    • Brake lamp, amber/red turn signals (front & rear).
    • Reflectors/tape on front/rear/sides.
    • Illuminated speedometer.
  3. Registration & Insurance: You need proper out-of-state registration and insurance.
  4. Utah Non-Resident OHV Permit:You must purchase this online for $30 for use on Utah public lands/trails (not for city streets).
  5. Utah OHV Education Course: All operators (even non-residents) may need proof of completing the Utah OHV safety course, especially for public land use.
Summary: If your Idaho-plated UTV is fully street-legal by Idaho standards AND meets all of Utah's gear requirements, and you have the Utah non-resident permit for public lands, you can drive it in Utah. Always carry your documents and be prepared for local city rules.
