What's new

The 2027 Xpeditions announced.

Watching a video. They are saying that for 2027, the CVT is air controlled. Which they say makes it quieter. I wonder if you can modify the earlier models to use that?

Possible, but unlikely. Or at least probably not at a reasonable cost if it is possible. It’s going to be ECU controlled a require the onboard air and complete clutch and clutch housing.
Because it’s integrated with the throttle control switch and system, it’s an entirely new system that previous ECUs likely don’t have the capability of running.

The Numatix clutch system works by force-shifting the clutch out. The equivalent of putting a manual transmission in a too high gear for the vehicle speed, causing it to operate the engine at a considerably lower rpm than the mechanical weights would.

Won’t know until someone gets their hands on one of them and gives some feedback, but my assumption is that it’ll neuter performance significantly in comfort mode, compared to current models. But if it fully disengages the Numatix in sport mode and allows the clutch to operate mechanically, it’ll remain the at same noise levels as current models in sport mode.

This system is still tackling engine rpms as the only reason for the noise levels, and doesn’t address the fact that the operator is in a small enclosure, surrounded by reverberating plastic panels that essentially amplify the noise coming into the space. It’s the same approach as their “Comfort Clutch” fix, just with a technologically massive leap.

My overall opinion is that it will be a massive improvement for people who don’t care in the least about the performance and just want a quiet cruise. My guess is that the people who push their Xpedition to the max, and wish it had more, will rarely use the comfort mode.

To me, if you want lower rpm to reduce engine noise, add more power!
An engine with more torque doesn't need the high rpm to get up and go.
It would be a win for the hot rod guys too

I agree with JT that this system will be like driving on overdrive all the time or starting in 3rd gear to keep the rpm down

I also think a lot of the noise comes from the valve train.
Oh, it does! It comes from the entire drivetrain.
The Prostar II engine is a high performance high RPM engine. It was designed and developed for the RZR XP. The idea with putting it in the Xpedition was to have a SxS with a somewhat utility build, but a performance powertrain, that would bridge the gap between utility and sport.

There isn’t a high performance SxS out there that’s quiet. The problem becomes exacerbated by having a completely enclosed cabin. My ‘24 XP5 Ultimate, with the open cab, was quieter at the driver location than from the same position in a Northstar. Even using the Canvas uppers on the doors didn’t make it noticeably worse, because it’s a soft material that can absorb sound rather than reflecting it.

My point is that Polaris is still going at the noise problem by neutering performance, rather than sound dampening, and closing off all the openings into the cabin.

Their claim is 9db sound reduction. But my guess is that’s only in comfort mode, where there’s essentially no performance. It does appear they’ve re-designed their clutch weights and profiles, with the claim of 1 second faster 0-50. (Again assuming that’s in sport mode where the Numatix is disengaged) the new clutch weights are 75g. That’s between the original, early ‘24 at 66g and the comfort weights at 81g. There is a difference in shift profiles, with both the original and comfort being a 44 and the new ones a 47.

So here’s what we’ve been doing since late 2023… By doing Aftermarket Assassins or Gilomen clutch kits and ECU tunes (tuning for performance), we’ve been doing much better than 1 second faster 0-50. As much as 4 seconds, when I was paying attention to that.
Then, with the machine running 500-700 rpms higher than the OEM tune and clutch, we’ve achieved a 7-9db noise reduction with sound dampening and insulation… In sport mode… at peak performance for the engine.

I am impressed with the idea and tech of the Numatix system. But using it as the means of noise reduction just feels like Comfort Clutch 2.0 And it only works by removing the “Sport” from the SxS.

Drop a 1500 with the standard rubber belt CVT in the Xpedition and you’d have the torque to perform at lower rpms. It’s a quieter motor to start with so that would be a really good start.
